Description
The birthstone of the February born is amethyst, one of the most expensive gemstones in the quartz group. The violet colour was considered a symbol of power and was therefore used in many crown jewels. The name comes from the Greek ‘amethystos’ and means ‘counteracting intoxication’. It was believed that the gemstone protected its wearer from drunkenness. When worn as a birthstone, amethyst symbolises inner strength and calm. It is said to help strengthen relationships and can have a calming effect.
