Description
Cowrie shells are actually marine snails and not mussels. They are found in the Indian Ocean, East Africa, Hawaii, but also in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. They are also known as porcelain snails due to their beautiful white surface. The name Kauri translates as ‘money’.
For a long time, snails were used as a means of payment in many African and Asian countries. They were also used to decorate bridles, clothing and many other objects. The cowrie snail is also considered a lucky charm to this day.
The Munich Jewels Isarsommer bracelet features a genuine cowrie shell and was in Munich handgeknüpft.
